South African Atlantic Sea salt and Dicerothamnus rhinocerotis
Flavour Profile - PINEY - resinous, bold grounding flavour
Rhino bush salt is a braai favourite. The resinous flavour is similar to tree sap and melts onto the flame-grilled surface of braaied meats and veggie kebabs to create a uniquely South African flavour. Add to wok-seared cabbage with chilli and garlic for a tasty side-dish.
It was traditionally used in the treatment of stomach complaints, including indigestion and was a popular remedy during the influenza epidemic of 1918. Rhinocerotinoic acid identified in Rhino bush has significant anti-inflammatory properties.
