Cancer bush is an old Cape remedy for stomach ailments and internal cancers. It was also traditionally used to treat colds, influenza, chicken-pox, diabetes, varicose veigns, piles, inflammation, liver problems, back-ache and rheumatism, stress-related ailments, shock, trauma, fits and depression. Experimental evidence indicates anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and anti-stress activity. In essence, Cancer bush is a powerful immune booster. It contains Canavanine, which is linked to anti-cancer activity and Pinotol, which is associated with anti-diabetic effects. Simultaneous use of Cancer bush with diabetic medication is not recommended. As a tea infusion, the flavour is initially bitter, but it’s palatable and has a sweet aftertaste.
